It helps to include your iPhone model, your iOS version (Settings, General, About), the Above version, and what happened. A screenshot is welcome.
The labels are in the wrong place
Tap Align, then point at the Sun, the Moon or a bright star and line up the crosshair. That corrects the compass, which is the usual cause. Keep the phone away from magnets, metal cases and car dashboards, and wave it in a slow figure-eight if iOS asks you to calibrate.
I can’t see any planes or satellites
- Check that location is allowed “While Using the App” in iOS Settings, and that you have a connection. Satellites appear a moment after the first launch, once their data downloads.
- Open the layer menu (top left) and check the layer is on, and check where the distance slider on the right is set.
- Aircraft come from a community network of receivers. Coverage is thin over oceans and remote areas.
- Most satellites are below the horizon or in Earth’s shadow at any moment. The ones you can see appear brighter and are labelled.
A flight’s route is missing or looks wrong
Routes come from a public database that maps each callsign to a usual route. Airlines reuse callsigns, so Above checks whether the aircraft’s position fits the route and says so if it does not. Private planes and flights without an airline callsign have no route.
Drones don’t show up
Above listens for drones that broadcast Remote ID over Bluetooth. Some drones broadcast it in ways an iPhone cannot receive, and Wi-Fi Remote ID is not supported, so a nearby drone may not appear.
What does “below the horizon” do?
The arrow button at the top left of the sky view shows what is on the other side of the Earth, dimmed. Settings, then Labels, has a separate switch for satellites below the horizon, which is off by default because most of the roughly 12,000 satellites are down there and would bury everything else.
Above Plus and subscriptions
Above Plus adds rewind (“What was that?”) and the time scrubber, pass alerts, widgets and Live Activities, and the transit finder. Everything else is free. The price is shown in the App Store before you subscribe.
- Restore a purchase: open the Above Plus screen and tap Restore.
- Cancel or change: on your iPhone, Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Above.
- Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Which phones work
Above needs an iPhone that supports ARKit, running iOS 17 or later. It is not available for iPad or Android.
